Revision [1153]

This is an old revision of InstallLaptopLenovoThinkpadT510 made by BenoitAudouard on 2011-12-29 01:44:41.

Lent by my enterprise on 28th December 2011: Lenovo t510 core i7 8 GB RAM (yeah, for christmas :D a bit afterwards, though it's not yet a gift, only lending for a "short" time)

Lenovo Thinkpad T510
Matrice15.6" HD Anti-Glare Display with LED Backlight
Processeur Intel Core i7-620M Processor (2.66GHz -4MB L3 - 1066MHz FSB)
HDD 500GB Hard Disk Drive 7200rpm
Ram 8GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
Wireless-N 1000 (1X2 BGN) IntelĀ  Centrino
Bluetooth
Webcam Camera 2,0 MP
Multi Recorder Optical Drive (12.7mm)
Batterie 6 cell Li-Ion
Clavier Azerty
TrackPoint with Touchpad
OS Windows Seven Business 64 bits, FR

yeah, a cool laptop for work :-)

announced autonomy: 3h30 to 4h00 (varying...) to 6h50 o_O WTF with this estimation? (depending on actual use I suppose... I do not have that much to do with windows...)
effective autonomy: 21h40 to... 23h13 (pretending it remains 2h30...)
starting windows : 23h19'15 to 23h20'20 preparing conf windows then 23h21:07 (WTF, seems the hard disk is _slow_ and the conf is weird)

blue key at boot only launches restore program, use F10 to access BIOS (and boot on an USB-key)
BIOS / Config / CPU : Intel(R) Virtualization technology: disabled by default... (check CPU type) + Intel(R) VT-d feature: disabled by default (what does it correspond to?)
BIOS / Startup put USB HDD first, then USB FDD, ATAPI CD0, USB CD, ATA HDD0, PCI LAN, ATA HDD1
use F12 key at boot (POST) to invoke a pop-up boot device list (I should have done that at first... maybe I missed it in the documentation I did not read as I wasn't provided with it :/)

Installing Mageia x86_64 on Lenovo T510

I prefer to use Mageia for partitionning as I master the installation :-) The idea would be:
first boot on usb-key 23h36:17 system available at 23:37:40 o_O how come it's sooooo loooonnng ? 23h39:10 once french / hour validated... ORLY 3 min on such a laptop o_O how come? I think my eeepc 901 is faster at booting on usb key...
at 23h40 : autonomy under GNU/Linux is announced at 2h (on usb key, Gnome Live USB) 0h44 : 20 min remaining, plugging in some 220V...)

resize NTFS partition from 450 GB to 44 GB (I would have expected less :/)
rebooted at 1h07:00, CHKDSK launched (classical when windows partition is resized), end at 1h12:40 and rebooting windows... which takes time, available at 1h14:10 :)

http://www.mageia.org/fr/downloads/ getting boot.iso for x86_64 cf. https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation_Media
dd if=boot.iso of=/dev/sdb # as root

starting with USB key at 1h37, choosing distrib-coffee (as usual), available for network install of x86_64 (remember that boot.iso is only 30 MB... relying on online repositories for install).
How come loading takes soooo loooonnng ? 1h39... now.

30 GB ext4 for Mageia, 9 GB for swap (will be shared)

Installing Centos 5.7 on Lenovo T510

I'd prefer a physical installation, anyway I'll try first with virtualbox to avoid problems with hardware.
